Why did X crop my image weirdly?

Non-16:9 uploads get an automatic preview crop that follows the platform's saliency logic, not your composition. Supplying 1600 × 900 sidesteps it — the preview is your image.

Does this help image quality on X?

Somewhat. X always re-encodes, but an image already at display ratio and size takes exactly one recompression with no extra scaling, which keeps text and edges cleaner.
